You image/clone the patient drive, then put that aside and work with the image from that moment on. Any decent file recovery tool should include such an option IMO. It is always a good idea to create a sector-by-sector disk image. In situations where standard file recovery does not cut it, it depends greatly on situation at hand what software to use.
